C.A.T.T.

Controlled Atmosphere Temperature Treatment

How does it work !

Like all other aerobic organisms insects also obtain oxygen (O2) from their environment in order to survive. All the insects carry out the same set of metabolic reactions as other animals for example glycolysis, Kreb's cycle, and the electron transport system to convert nutrients like carbohydrates into the chemical bond energy of ATP. The final step of these metabolic reactions is the reaction of oxygen atoms with hydrogen ions to produce water accompanied with the release of energy that is captured in a phosphate bond of ATP. An insect's respiratory system is the biological system with which it introduces respiratory gases to its interior and performs gas exchange.

Air enters the respiratory systems of insects through a series of external openings called spiracles. These external openings, which act as muscular valves in some insects, lead to the internal respiratory system, a densely networked array of tubes called tracheae. This network of transverse and longitudinal tracheae equalizes pressure throughout the system. It is responsible for delivering sufficient oxygen (O2) to all cells of the body and for removing carbon dioxide (CO2) that is produced as a waste product of cellular respiration. The respiratory system of insects (and many other arthropods) is separate from the circulatory system.

By changing the conditions of the atmosphere , the respiratory system of the insect will be affected and the insect will not survive. Using the right O2 / CO2 conditions, temperature and humidity the mortality rate will reach 100%.

Advantages of C.A.T.T.

The treatment can be applied on many products, like dry bulk (grain/rice/corn/seeds etc), tobacco, cotton, plants, flowers ,bulbs and heritage (museum pieces , like paintings and furniture). Depending on the type of pest, the treatment is very effective and will substitute chemicals.

If you want to identify an insect, please use the button  insect identification and browse through the database of InsectIdentification.org .

Unique advantages of CATT :

  1. non chemical treatment

  2. high mortality rate

  3. no chemical residues or chemical waste

  4. no resistent development

  5. kills phosphine resistent insects

Our Technology and experience

The application of C.A.T.T. requires a gastight area to maintain specific atmospheric conditions during a certain period of time. In case the treatment is temperature and humidity is critical , additional equipment like a heater/cooling unit or humidifier is required to obtain the optimal conditions for a perfect desinfestation.

With our partner Ruvoma based in the Netherlands we share many years of experience with insect control and we are able to manage or supervise any CAT treatment around the globe.

Whether a bulk carrier, container or big-bag needs to be treated on site, we have the knowledge and experience to execute an effective treatment and save the quality of your product.

NEWS
African Fruit Mot Makes Growers Of Bell Peppers Extra Alert !

Due to import of roses from Kenia, the African Fruitmot is frequently detected in the Netherlands. The African Fruitmot keen on bell peppers are certainly a point of attention for greenhouses in particular bell peppers. Contamination of bell peppers with the fruit mot can lead to export restrictions and can cause significant economic damage nationwide.

If you want to read more about the African Fruitmot in the Netherlands please view the published article in the AD .

To avoid the import of the African Fuit Mot , C.A.T.T. technology can be a perfect solution. For more information about our solution for desinfestation of the AFM, please download our Powerpoint Presentation  CATT against fruitmot .
